Tragedy Strikes Sikkim: Tunnel Collapse Claims 20 Lives Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The tragic collapse of a construction tunnel in Sikkim’s Namchi district has led to the confirmed deaths of 20 workers, with rescue efforts still in progress as five individuals remain trapped inside.

This incident occurred on Monday while the tunnel was being constructed as part of the Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, overseen by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) in the Samardung area. The project is critical for transporting high-pressure water from a nearby reservoir to the powerhouse, contributing to the region’s energy infrastructure.

According to reports, the disaster was triggered by a sudden explosion caused by the suspected buildup of methane gas embedded within the rock formations. The explosion resulted in a dangerous release of dense smoke and toxic gases, complicating rescue operations. Initially, 27 workers were reported trapped; however, two individuals managed to escape, as confirmed by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

Namchi Superintendent of Police Sonam D Bhutia stated that out of the 25 individuals still inside, 20 have been confirmed dead, with 12 bodies recovered so far. The ongoing rescue operations face significant challenges, including reports of rescue workers experiencing dizziness and losing consciousness due to the toxic environment, which has slowed down recovery efforts.

In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Tamang expressed his profound sorrow over the loss and announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those who sustained injuries. As rescue teams continue to work in challenging conditions, the total number of casualties may rise, prompting concerns among officials and the local community.
