In a tragic incident that has drawn international attention, four Indian nationals lost their lives and one sustained critical injuries following an attack on a cargo ship off the coast of Odesa, Ukraine, on Sunday evening. The vessel, named Golden Leo and flagged under Guinea-Bissau, was targeted shortly after it departed from the port, leading to a devastating loss for the families of those involved.
The Ministry of External Affairs in India confirmed the casualties and is actively engaged in monitoring the situation. Among the 17 crew members aboard the Golden Leo, five were Indian. The Ministry has expressed its condolences and is working to provide support to the affected individuals and their families. In a statement, the Indian government condemned the attack, highlighting that such aggressions against commercial shipping not only endanger the lives of innocent civilians but also jeopardize global trade and navigation.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has laid the blame for the attack squarely on Russia, alleging that it occurred within Ukraine’s maritime corridor. In a series of posts on social media, Sybiha described the targeted Golden Leo as a civilian ship with an international crew that plays a vital role in ensuring food security across the globe. He stated, “Putin saw another target,” implying a deliberate attempt to disrupt commercial operations in the region.
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has escalated into one of the most significant conflicts in Europe since World War II, leading to widespread casualties and extensive damage. This recent incident underscores the precarious nature of maritime operations in conflict zones and raises concerns about the safety of international shipping routes.
As the Indian diplomatic mission continues to assess the situation, the government is urging all parties involved to exercise restraint. The attack has once again highlighted the dire need for dialogue and a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, emphasizing that the lives of civilians, regardless of their nationality, must be protected.
