Government to Implement Real-Time Tracking for Indian Seafarers Amid Rising Maritime Tensions

The Indian government has announced the establishment of a real-time tracking system for Indian sailors operating in the volatile regions of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman. This initiative follows a recent incident where an Indian sailor was killed and ten others sustained injuries due to Iranian attacks on two oil tankers navigating through the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels, named Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, had a total crew of 46, with 30 of them being Indian nationals.

Since the escalation of conflict in West Asia, which began on February 28, the safety of Indian seafarers has been a growing concern, with reports indicating that at least five Indian sailors have lost their lives and one remains unaccounted for. The Indian Express reported a total of 29 attacks on vessels carrying Indian crew members in the region, heightening the urgency for effective safety measures.

In an inter-ministerial meeting held on Tuesday, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized the need for a proactive “Seafarer-First” approach to address security threats faced by Indian sailors in West Asia. The comprehensive measures proposed include monitoring each vessel carrying Indian seafarers, appointing dedicated liaison officers for the affected crew, and ensuring continuous coordination among various government bodies—including the Ministry of External Affairs, the Navy, and the Directorate General of Shipping, alongside Indian missions in Iran, Oman, and the UAE.

Sonowal elaborated on the functionalities of the new dashboard, which aims to provide real-time updates and ensure the safety of Indian crew members on foreign vessels. This strategic effort will not only enhance security but also foster a sense of reassurance among families of the seafarers, who are often left anxious about the safety of their loved ones operating in high-risk areas.

The government’s prompt response highlights the critical role of Indian seafarers in the global maritime industry, as well as the need for enhanced security protocols to protect them in regions fraught with geopolitical tensions.
