Enforcement Directorate Targets BJP Leader Vikas Garg in Mahadev Betting App Scandal

On July 10, the ED announced that Garg is being prosecuted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, due to his alleged connections with the Mahadev Online Book and Skyexchange betting platforms. The Mahadev app, which claims to offer “sports insights,” has garnered over a million users, while Skyexchange operates out of Dubai and is purportedly linked to the Mahadev platform.

The investigation into these betting platforms stems from allegations dating back to 2022, when central agencies launched a probe into the promoters of Mahadev—Chhattisgarh businessmen Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal. They are accused of running an illegal online betting syndicate that not only laundered money through various means, including benami accounts and hawala networks but also allegedly manipulated the Indian stock market. The case has generated considerable public interest, particularly as it was highlighted in 2023, when allegations emerged that the promoters had funneled nearly Rs 508 crore in kickbacks to Bhupesh Baghel, the then chief minister of Chhattisgarh from the Congress party.

These revelations arrived at a politically sensitive time, just months before the assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, raising questions about the implications for both the Congress party and its leadership. The ensuing political fallout from these allegations played a role in the Congress party’s performance in the elections, contributing to their defeat.
