Kejriwal Appeals to PM Modi for Pure Petrol Option Amid E20 Fuel Concerns

In a bold move, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing serious concerns regarding the government’s push for E20 petrol, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. In his letter, which was made public on Monday, Kejriwal emphasized the necessity for consumers to have the option to choose between traditional pure petrol and the controversial ethanol-blended fuel at petrol stations.

Kejriwal’s correspondence comes on the heels of the Union government’s Ethanol Blended Petrol programme, which mandates the sale of E20 petrol as part of its broader strategy to enhance energy independence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The government achieved its target of integrating a 20% ethanol mix in petrol five years ahead of schedule, in July 2025. This initiative is viewed as a pivotal part of India’s efforts to transition to more sustainable energy sources, while also aiming to provide financial support to sugarcane farmers.

However, the former Delhi Chief Minister argued that the decision to enforce E20 petrol lacks adequate scientific, economic, or engineering justification. He has called for a crucial dialogue with PM Modi to address these pressing concerns. Kejriwal believes that forcing consumers to use E20 petrol could be detrimental, especially since it reportedly offers lower mileage and calorific value compared to pure petrol, which could lead to consumers paying more for less efficiency.

In his letter, Kejriwal urged the Central government to take immediate action on two fronts: first, to allow consumers the freedom to choose between pure petrol and E20 at fuel pumps, and second, to lower the price of E20 petrol to reflect its decreased performance. He stressed that the pricing should be adjusted to ensure citizens are not overcharged for a fuel that may yield lesser value.
