Supreme Court Slaps Rs 3 Lakh Fine on Comedian Samay Raina Over Court Order Violation

The Supreme Court of India has imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on comedian Samay Raina for failing to adhere to court directives concerning his show, ‘India’s Got Latent’. The court expressed its discontent with Raina, stating that he had “taken the court for a ride” by not inviting individuals with disabilities as directed. This ruling comes as part of a larger case that scrutinizes insensitive humor regarding disabilities showcased in his performances.

Alongside Raina, four other comedians—Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Nishant Jagadish Tanwar, Sonali Thakkar, and Vipul Goyal—were also fined the same amount. The Supreme Court’s decision was influenced by the failure of these entertainers to comply with previous court orders aimed at promoting awareness and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the entertainment context. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, noted that Raina’s actions showed a blatant disregard for the court’s guidance.

In a significant ruling last November, the Supreme Court had mandated that these comedians conduct special shows designed to highlight the achievements and stories of individuals with disabilities. They were also instructed to raise funds to assist with medical treatment for people suffering from conditions such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy. These directives were issued in response to a petition from the Cure SMA Foundation, which sought to establish better guidelines for the representation of disabled individuals in popular culture.

The court’s observations reflect a broader concern regarding the portrayal of disabilities in comedy and media, emphasizing the importance of sensitivity and respect in entertainment.
