West Bengal Police Detain 35 Amid Protests Following Minor’s Rape and Murder

In a tragic incident that has shaken the community of Baruipur in West Bengal, police have made 35 arrests following violent protests triggered by the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The unrest erupted on July 5, a day after the young victim’s body was discovered in a sack submerged in a pond in the Surjyapur locality of South 24 Parganas district. Initially reported missing by her father, the case escalated quickly as law enforcement uncovered the gruesome details of the crime.

According to Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Anand, the police apprehended 30 individuals in connection with the unrest prior to making five additional arrests on Friday. The authorities are utilizing footage from multiple videos that circulated widely on social media to identify other suspects involved in the violence. The case, which began as a missing person report on Saturday, evolved to include serious charges such as rape, gang rape, murder, and destruction of evidence, alongside provisions from the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The tragic incident has incited widespread outrage, with demonstrators taking to the streets to voice their anger. Protesters blocked roads and a railway line, burned tyres, and vandalized police vehicles in their demonstration against the crime and perceived inadequacies in policing. During the chaos, locals apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in the crime and allegedly assaulted them. Additionally, a 26-year-old man, thought to be linked to the accused, fell victim to mob violence and was lynched on Sunday, raising concerns about community justice gone awry.

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari responded to the lynching, asserting that the individual killed was innocent and emphasizing the need for a proper investigation into the incident. Among those arrested, three individuals named Prabhas Mondal, Dibakar Sardar, and Ananda Sardar have been specifically noted. Notably, Mondal was reported to have died in an alleged gunfight on Wednesday, further complicating the already volatile situation.

This tragic case underscores ongoing issues of violence against women and children in India, reigniting discussions on justice and law enforcement efficiency.
