Ayodhya Ram Temple Trust Accepts Champat Rai’s Resignation Amid Allegations of Misuse of Funds

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has accepted the resignation of its general secretary, Champat Rai, in light of ongoing allegations regarding the embezzlement of donations intended for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This decision, confirmed by the trust’s treasurer, comes after a series of developments related to financial irregularities within the temple trust.

Rai’s resignation, which he cited was on ‘moral grounds,’ was effective from June 26, alongside that of fellow trustee Anil Mishra. Their departures have raised significant concerns about the management of funds that have been collected for one of India’s most revered religious sites. The trust has been under scrutiny following an FIR filed on June 25 against eight individuals suspected of financial misconduct. This FIR was prompted by a complaint from the trust itself, indicating a serious internal investigation.

As a part of the ongoing investigation, all eight suspects named in the FIR have been arrested and are facing charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a stringent law governing offenses in India. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established by the Uttar Pradesh government on June 13 to delve deeper into the alleged financial discrepancies. Although the preliminary report presented to the government on June 23 has not been made public, sources familiar with the findings suggest that it points towards significant lapses in the management of funds, inadequate oversight, and negligence in handling the donations.

The ongoing turmoil has sparked a political storm, with opposition leaders and whistleblowers alleging that the temple trust has not been transparent in its financial dealings. They claim that substantial amounts of cash and jewellery offerings made by devotees may have been mishandled. The trust, which oversees the temple’s operations, has been under increasing pressure to address these allegations and restore public confidence.

As the investigation unfolds, the SIT is expected to release a final report next week, which could provide further insight into the alleged mismanagement and hold accountable those responsible. The Ram temple in Ayodhya has immense cultural and religious significance for millions of Hindus, and the integrity of its management is crucial for maintaining the trust of its devotees.
