Tragedy Strikes Mumbai as Building Collapse Claims Six Lives Amid Heavy Rains

A tragic incident occurred in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday evening when a residential building collapsed, resulting in the loss of six lives. The mishap took place against the backdrop of severe rainfall that has been affecting the city, leading to a red alert being issued for the region.

The building, situated in Janata Nagar, collapsed around 8:30 PM local time. Initial reports indicate that one individual died instantly at the scene, while five others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital. Disturbingly, five of the deceased were minors, highlighting the tragedy of this event, which has raised concerns regarding building safety in flood-prone areas.

Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, with emergency teams working to extricate those trapped under the rubble. Reports confirmed that at least one person sustained injuries but was in stable condition following medical attention. The cause of the building’s collapse remains uncertain as investigations commence to ascertain the structural integrity of similar buildings in the area.

This incident comes in the wake of adverse weather conditions across Mumbai, where heavy rainfall since Friday has resulted in significant disruptions. On the same day, a 63-year-old man tragically lost his life in Kurla when a tree fell onto his shop due to the intense weather. The persistent rains have caused widespread waterlogging in various parts of the city, particularly in areas like Andheri, leading to traffic snarls and public transportation delays.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued a red alert, indicating the likelihood of intense rainfall accompanied by gusty winds of up to 60 km/h in certain regions, including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to take precautions as the weather is expected to remain unstable. Schools across Mumbai, Pune, and Thane have been advised to remain cautious in light of the weather warnings.
