Mumbai Under Orange Alert as Monsoon Hits Delhi Late

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and its neighboring districts, including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, due to predictions of moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas. The alert comes as the city continues to experience persistent downpours, raising concerns about safety and infrastructure.

Between 8 AM on Thursday and 7 AM on Friday, Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 114 mm. The eastern suburbs were particularly hit, receiving 102 mm, while the western suburbs experienced slightly more at 109 mm. This heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging and disrupted daily life for many residents.

Tragically, the extreme weather has resulted in fatalities linked to electrical hazards. A 17-year-old girl named Aliya Mohamad Sajid Chandiwala was electrocuted in a waterlogged area outside her home in Mumbra on Wednesday night. Reports indicate that Aliya was in contact with electricity that leaked into the water while stepping outside during the rain. Following this incident, the police have filed a first information report against the officials of Torrent Power Limited, citing negligence. This incident follows another rain-related death in Bhiwandi, where a 26-year-old sweet shop worker lost his life due to electrocution.

As Mumbai grapples with these challenges, the monsoon has also made its presence felt in the capital, Delhi, arriving five days later than expected. The southwest monsoon reached Delhi on Thursday, which usually sees this seasonal change around June 27. The late arrival has raised eyebrows, with locals now hoping for a steady and beneficial downpour to replenish water sources and mitigate the effects of any drought conditions.

With the monsoon season typically bringing relief from the scorching summer heat, it also poses unique challenges, especially in densely populated urban areas like Mumbai and Delhi. Citizens are urged to take precautions, stay informed about weather updates, and exercise caution, especially in rain-affected zones. Authorities are working diligently to manage the situation, but the unpredictability of the monsoon can lead to unforeseen circumstances.
