Indian Government Prolongs Customs Duty Exemption on Key Petrochemicals Amid Global Supply Challenges

In a significant move aimed at addressing ongoing global supply chain disruptions, the Union government has decided to extend the customs duty exemption on approximately 40 critical petrochemical products for an additional 15 days, until July 15, 2026. This decision, announced by the Ministry of Finance, comes in light of the escalating conflict in West Asia, which has impacted the availability of essential resources.

The customs duty waiver, originally implemented on April 2 and set to expire on June 30, was introduced to safeguard the domestic market’s supply levels for vital petrochemicals. The government noted that Indian petroleum companies had been directed to focus their production efforts on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) during this period, further necessitating the continued availability of petrochemical products.

The Finance Ministry’s announcement highlighted that extending the waiver was crucial to facilitate a smooth transition for sectors reliant on these products as the geopolitical situation gradually stabilizes. The measure aims to ensure that businesses can operate without disruption as they navigate the shifting landscape of raw material availability.

Among the petrochemical products benefitting from this exemption are polypropylene, polystyrene, polyols, polybutadiene, styrene butadiene, and anhydrous ammonia. While India does produce some petrochemicals domestically, reliance on imports remains significant, especially during times of international turmoil that can affect supply chains.

This extension reflects the government’s commitment to bolstering the domestic petrochemical sector and mitigating any adverse impacts on industries dependent on these materials. As businesses adapt to the challenges posed by global events, the timely intervention by the government is expected to provide much-needed relief.
