This research compiled data from three extensive U.S. studies involving nearly 150,000 health professionals, including nurses, tracked over a 30-year period. Participants regularly reported their engagement in strength training as well as aerobic exercises such as walking, cycling, and swimming. Over the duration of the studies, nearly 36,000 individuals passed away, allowing researchers to analyze the relationship between muscle-strengthening activities and mortality risk.
The findings reveal a notable trend: individuals who dedicated approximately 90 to 120 minutes weekly to strength training, equating to about one and a half to two hours, experienced a 13% reduction in their overall risk of premature death compared to those who did not engage in such activities. Moreover, the study indicated that the benefits of strength training were particularly pronounced regarding two leading causes of death. Additionally, there was a striking 27% reduction in the risk of death from neurological conditions, predominantly affecting cognitive functions.
