Reviving Ties: India to Resume Tourist Visas for Bangladeshi Nationals

In a significant diplomatic move, India has announced the resumption of tourist visas for citizens of Bangladesh, a development that aims to mend the frayed relations between the two neighbors. The announcement was made by Dinesh Trivedi, India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, shortly after he presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Starting from Sunday, applications for the tourist visas will be accepted at five designated centers located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet, and Khulna. Trivedi emphasized that while tourist visas were being reinstated, urgent medical visa applications would continue to be processed without interruption. This gesture comes as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman embarks on a state visit to Beijing, underscoring the need for a confidence-building measure in the context of historically strained Bangladesh-India relations.

The suspension of tourist visa services by India in August 2024 followed political upheaval in Bangladesh, which saw the ousting of long-serving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This suspension led to increased anti-India sentiments within Bangladesh, prominently displayed through widespread protests and critical media commentary. Grievances have been exacerbated by several factors, including reported border incidents involving India’s Border Security Force and allegations of forced repatriation of individuals into Bangladesh, fueling public discontent.

Moreover, misinformation about Bangladesh circulating in Indian media has further strained public perception, contributing to a growing wave of nationalism and pro-Pakistani sentiment among certain segments of the Bangladeshi populace.
