US Imposes Sanctions on Indian National and Chhattisgarh Firm Over Sudan Civil War Allegations

In a significant development, the United States has imposed sanctions on an Indian national and his explosives manufacturing company based in Chhattisgarh, alongside six other individuals and entities. This action is part of a broader strategy aimed at disrupting procurement and recruitment networks believed to be contributing to the ongoing civil war in Sudan.

The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Tens of thousands of people have lost their lives, and nearly 14 million have been displaced, exacerbating already dire conditions in the region.

According to a statement released by the US Treasury Department, SBL Energy Limited, the Chhattisgarh-based company, has been linked to the supply of over 200 shipments of explosives and related materials to Sudan. These supplies were reportedly sent to a Sudanese firm, Target Multiactivities Company Limited, which is affiliated with the Defense Industries System, Sudan’s foremost defense enterprise, through the Giad Industrial Group. The US had previously sanctioned both these entities for their roles in supporting military operations.

The allegations further suggest that the explosives imported by Target Multiactivities Company Limited, sourced from both Egyptian and Indian companies, including SBL Energy Limited, were utilized in bombings carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces. As a result of these sanctions, all of the designated individuals and entities will have their properties and interests within the US frozen, marking a significant move to curb activities that threaten regional stability.

Alok Choudhari, the CEO of SBL Energy Limited and an Indian national, has also been directly targeted under these sanctions. The US government has expressed its intent to hold accountable those whose actions contribute to the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire of this brutal conflict.
