A first information report (FIR) has been lodged against eight individuals for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation of donations intended for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The FIR was initiated following a formal complaint from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the temple’s administration, according to reports.
The FIR asserts violations under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including theft by a clerk or servant, criminal breach of trust, handling of stolen property, and conspiracy. This legal action follows the findings of a preliminary report by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was commissioned by the state government after the trust raised concerns about financial irregularities.
While the details of the SIT’s report have not been publicly disclosed, sources familiar with the findings have indicated that it points to significant lapses in oversight, as well as negligence regarding the management and counting of the cash and valuables donated by devotees. These revelations have raised serious questions about the internal controls and transparency within the trust.
The SIT was established on June 14, responding to a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and it is expected to continue its investigations, with a final report anticipated in the next 15 days. Opposition leaders, along with a whistleblower, have alleged that cash and jewelry offerings from devotees were misappropriated by temple employees, raising alarms about the trust’s governance and accountability.
The Ram temple, located at the site of the former Babri Masjid, has been a focal point of religious and political sentiments in India, particularly since its demolition by Hindutva extremists on December 6, 1992. The ongoing legal and administrative scrutiny of its financial operations adds another layer of complexity to the temple’s already contentious history.
