The much-anticipated 19th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) commenced on Monday, captivating audiences with its compelling theme of climate change through the lens of unique storytelling. The festival kicked off with the visually stunning documentary, Time and Water, directed by Sara Dosa, which highlights the alarming impact of climate change on Iceland’s glaciers.
MIFF 2026 not only showcased Dosa’s poignant work but also featured an array of films that align with the festival’s commitment to promote documentaries, short films, and animation. Other notable presentations included the short fiction film Agapito by Filipino filmmakers Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Danelle Romero, as well as the animated short Good Luck to You All by Canadian filmmaker Cordell Barker. The festival is set to run until June 21, offering a rich tapestry of narratives that engage with critical issues.
Organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), MIFF boasts a robust prize pool of Rs 45 lakh across 18 awards in various categories, making it a significant event for filmmakers. Despite its governmental roots, which have historically brought challenges related to censorship and red tape, MIFF continues to attract independent filmmakers, particularly those with politically charged narratives. The festival’s previous affiliation with the Films Division until its merger with the NFDC in 2020 has not diminished its appeal.
The opening ceremony on Monday was marked by an extensive series of accolades and speeches that some attendees found lengthy. Alongside the formalities, a reality show-inspired dance performance added a touch of entertainment to the proceedings, although opinions varied on its relevance to the festival’s artistic focus. Nonetheless, MIFF serves as a crucial platform for voices in the independent film community, promoting creative expression despite the challenges posed by bureaucratic hurdles in the film industry.
As MIFF 2026 unfolds, it aims to foster a dialogue around pressing global issues through the art of filmmaking. The festival represents a convergence of diverse cultures and storytelling approaches, inviting audiences to reflect on the stories that shape our world and the implications they hold for the future.
