Legal Action Initiated Against AIIMS Bhopal Nurses for Administering Hazardous Injection to Minor Cancer Patient

In a troubling incident that has raised serious concerns about medical negligence, an FIR has been filed against two nurses at the renowned All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The allegations involve the administration of a hazardous injection containing formalin to a three-year-old boy suffering from cancer.

The patient, Sarthak Yadav, hailing from Korja village in the Bina tehsil of Sagar district, tragically passed away in December, shortly after receiving the injection. This alarming information was reported by various news outlets, including The Hindu and The Indian Express, which highlighted the grave implications of this incident.

Sarthak was admitted to AIIMS Bhopal on December 15 for treatment of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a serious form of blood cancer. The FIR, lodged against the two nurses, Madhubala Sharma and Anuka Gujarati, followed an internal inquiry that indicated significant negligence on their part. The inquiry revealed that a syringe containing formalin had been prepared for a planned bone marrow biopsy, which was later postponed. Astonishingly, the syringe was neither discarded nor properly secured and was simply left on a locker beside the child’s bed, raising questions about standard hospital protocols.

On December 17, while the nurses were attending to Sarthak, Nursing Officer Madhubala Sharma allegedly used the syringe to flush the child’s intravenous line without verifying its contents, despite warnings from the child’s father, Siddharth Yadav. The father reportedly cautioned the nurses three times, alerting them to the potential danger of the unverified syringe.

The decision to file an FIR against the nurses underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability in medical practices, especially in institutions like AIIMS, which are expected to maintain high standards of patient care. As the investigation progresses, this incident highlights the critical importance of stringent protocols in healthcare to prevent such tragedies in the future.
