The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has once again summoned the United States’ Chargé d’Affaires, Jason Meeks, to express its strong disapproval regarding the ongoing military strikes by the US on vessels operated by Indian crew members in West Asia. This marks the second consecutive day that Meeks has been called in, indicating the gravity of the situation from India’s perspective.
In a statement issued by the MEA, officials conveyed their profound concern over the utilization of lethal force against civilian maritime shipping. The diplomatic mission emphasized that such actions are unacceptable, particularly given the sensitive nature of the region, which is currently facing heightened geopolitical tensions. The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, is currently in Kazakhstan, leaving Meeks to address these pressing concerns.
The Indian government has stressed that the US military’s operations not only threaten the safety and security of civilian lives but also destabilize maritime commerce in an area that is crucial for international trade. In light of recent incidents, including a strike off the coast of Oman that resulted in the deaths of three Indian nationals, the MEA has requested that Meeks relay New Delhi’s sentiments back to Washington and ensure that stringent measures are taken to avoid civilian casualties.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello, which was struck during the recent military action, had 21 crew members successfully rescued. The ongoing situation underscores the risks faced by Indian seafarers operating in volatile regions and amplifies calls for greater diplomatic engagement and protection for Indian nationals abroad.
As the MEA continues to engage with US diplomats, it is clear that India is positioning itself to advocate for the safety of its citizens while holding foreign powers accountable for their military actions. This incident could have broader implications for India-US relations, particularly in the context of defense and maritime security initiatives.
