Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha Bid Thwarted as Nomination Faces Rejection in Madhya Pradesh

In a significant development ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18, the nomination of Meenakshi Natarajan, the Congress party’s sole candidate from Madhya Pradesh, has been rejected. The decision came on Tuesday after objections were raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly by state general secretary Rahul Kothari. Kothari claimed that Natarajan had not fully disclosed a pending criminal case against her in her election affidavit.

The returning officer, who was tasked with reviewing the nomination, initially sought Natarajan’s clarification on the matter, granting her until 6 PM that same day to provide her explanation. Following a thorough evaluation of her response, the officer ultimately decided to deny her nomination, according to reports from Aaj Tak.

In the aftermath of the rejection, Natarajan held a press conference where she contested the decision, alleging that the arguments presented by Congress’ legal representatives were not given due consideration. “What started as an issue of vote theft has now escalated into a case of seat theft,” she asserted, emphasizing the political ramifications of the incident. Additionally, she pointed to the BJP’s strategy, implying that the party’s move to field a third candidate had compromised the election’s integrity, indicating a calculated attempt to secure an advantage.

The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, which comprises 230 members, is set to elect three representatives to the Rajya Sabha. With the current effective strength of the Assembly at 229 members, a candidate requires 58 votes from the first-preference count to emerge victorious. The BJP holds a dominant position with 164 MLAs, excluding the speaker, which sets a challenging landscape for opposition candidates like Natarajan.
