In a harrowing incident in Pune district, a total of thirteen individuals have tragically lost their lives after allegedly consuming spurious liquor. The reports, which surfaced on Friday, indicate that the victims displayed alarming symptoms before their deaths, raising serious concerns about the safety of alcoholic beverages in the region.
Authorities have taken swift action, arresting eight individuals, including a man named Yogesh Wankhede, who is accused of brewing and distributing the toxic alcohol. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, confirmed the arrests and stated that a thorough investigation is underway to unravel the entire network behind this grievous situation.
Out of the thirteen deceased, eight were from Phugewadi in Pimpri-Chinchwad, while the remaining five hailed from Pune city. Eyewitness accounts and medical reports suggest that the victims experienced severe symptoms such as dizziness, breathlessness, frothing at the mouth, and a sudden decline in heart rate. These alarming indicators are consistent with poisoning, which has now prompted an investigation by local law enforcement and the excise department.
Fadnavis highlighted the potential involvement of methanol, a hazardous industrial alcohol, suggesting that this could be the toxic substance responsible for the calamity. Methanol is known to have devastating effects on the human body, resulting in severe illness, blindness, or even death when ingested. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are determined to bring those responsible to justice and ensure that such tragedies do not reoccur.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illicit liquor and the urgent need for enhanced regulation and monitoring of the alcohol industry in India. Despite ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal brewing, cases like these expose vulnerabilities in enforcement and the need for public awareness regarding the perils of consuming unregulated alcoholic products. The community is left grappling with grief and anger as they await accountability for the devastating loss of life.
