Calcutta High Court Halts Action Against Actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay Over Controversial Remarks

The Calcutta High Court has issued an interim ruling preventing any coercive actions against actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay regarding comments he made in the aftermath of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. The court’s decision came on Friday, amidst rising concerns over political tensions following the elections.

This legal development arises from a First Information Report (FIR) lodged against Chattopadhyay and fellow actor Swastika Mukherjee earlier this month. The complaint, made by an advocate, claims that both actors engaged in provocative social media exchanges that could have incited further violence in an already volatile political climate.

In the context of the May 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) emerged victorious over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leading to widespread unrest across the state. Following the elections, the court had mandated a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the violence, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established to address the situation.

The complainant contends that shortly after the TMC secured a majority, Parambrata posted a message on social media stating, “Let today be declared World Thrashing Day.” This statement was allegedly met with a humorous endorsement from Mukherjee, who responded with, “Hahaha, let it be.” The advocate’s complaint further argues that such remarks contributed to the prevailing atmosphere of political hostility and unrest.

The advocate’s claims assert that Chattopadhyay and Mukherjee’s comments not only incited but also encouraged violence against BJP workers, who were reportedly under attack at the time. This case highlights the sensitive nature of political expression in India, especially in a post-election environment marked by significant turmoil.

As the situation develops, the actors remain under scrutiny while the court has temporarily shielded them from immediate legal repercussions.
