Parliamentary Panel Summons Education Ministry and CBI Over NEET Exam Irregularities

In a significant move concerning the integrity of entrance examinations in India, officials from the Union Ministry of Education, the National Testing Agency (NTA), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have been summoned to appear before a parliamentary panel. This session is scheduled for Friday and comes in the wake of rising concerns over the conduct of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical courses.

The Rajya Sabha Secretariat issued a notice on Wednesday, addressing the importance of this meeting. The officials are expected to respond to queries regarding assurances given in the Upper House of Parliament. This follows an unstarred question raised on November 27, 2024, which sought clarity on the investigation related to allegations of a paper leak during the NEET examination held that year.

Allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities began circulating after the declaration of NEET results on June 4, 2024. The Ministry of Education has acknowledged these concerns, stating that the CBI is conducting a thorough investigation into the reported irregularities, which include conspiracy, cheating, and breaches of trust associated with the exam.

As of November 22, 2024, the CBI has filed five chargesheets involving 45 individuals, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The ministry’s response in the Rajya Sabha underscored the need for transparency and accountability in the examination process, specifically regarding how the NTA awards contracts for conducting exams to private vendors.

The upcoming parliamentary meeting is poised to shed light not only on the ongoing investigations but also on the protocols in place to ensure the fairness and credibility of entrance examinations in India.
