Editors Guild Criticizes PM Modi’s Avoidance of Journalist Queries During European Visit

The Editors Guild of India expressed concerns over the recent interactions between Indian officials and journalists during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Norway and the Netherlands, labelling the exchanges as “embarrassing.” This criticism stems primarily from instances where Modi declined to answer questions posed by local reporters following a press briefing, raising alarms about media engagement during his foreign trips.

During an encounter on May 18, Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng Svendsen confronted the Indian Prime Minister regarding his refusal to participate in press conferences or address media inquiries directly. Svendsen’s question brought to light a recurring issue regarding the Indian government’s interaction with the press, particularly in countries that uphold strong press freedoms. Norway and the Netherlands, ranked first and second in the World Press Freedom Index respectively, starkly contrast with India’s position at a dismal 157 out of 180 countries, highlighting significant concerns about media freedom in India.

The Editors Guild emphasized that while international perspectives on media freedom rankings can vary, India’s low ranking should not be dismissed lightly. It reflects the serious challenges faced by journalists in the country, especially in an era where the press is expected to play a crucial role in a functioning democracy. The Guild articulated that the current state of media freedoms in India poses a grave issue, indicating a shrinking space for journalistic inquiry and expression.

Furthermore, the Guild pointed out that while Western journalists may not fully grasp the complexities of India’s historical context or the vital role of the press during the freedom struggle, their insistence on the importance of media inquiries in a democracy is valid. They argued that restrictions on the media have far-reaching implications, adversely affecting not only economic growth but also societal well-being.

As discussions surrounding press freedom and governmental engagement with media continue, the need for a more open and communicative approach from leaders like Prime Minister Modi becomes increasingly critical.
