Delhi Gymkhana Club Challenges Eviction Notice from Union Government in High Court

The venerable Delhi Gymkhana Club has taken legal action against the Union government’s recent directive requiring it to vacate its expansive 27.3-acre premises by June 5. The club’s plea was presented in the High Court before Justice Avneesh Jhingan on Monday, where lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi requested an expedited hearing. The court has scheduled to hear the matter on Tuesday.

Established as one of the oldest and most prestigious social and sporting venues in the capital, the Delhi Gymkhana Club attracts a distinguished clientele that includes diplomats, senior bureaucrats, and military officials. Its luxurious facilities and rich history make it a cornerstone of social life in New Delhi.

On Friday, the Land and Development Office, an agency operating under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, issued an order mandating the club’s evacuation. The government justified its decision by stating the land is essential for enhancing defence infrastructure and other critical public safety initiatives. This parcel of land, strategically located near the Prime Minister’s official residence and significant security establishments, was originally leased to the club for recreation and social purposes.

The government’s action stems from a specific clause in the lease agreement that permits the reversion of the land for public use. This clause empowers the government to reclaim the property if it’s deemed necessary for the public good. In this instance, officials indicated that the entire area, including all associated buildings, gardens, and facilities, would revert to the President of India.

This legal battle not only highlights the clash between historical institutions and government imperatives but also raises questions regarding the future of such private entities in an increasingly security-conscious environment. As the Delhi Gymkhana Club prepares for its court appearance, the outcome could set significant precedents for similar establishments across the country.
