Delhi High Court Grants Umar Khalid Three-Day Bail for Mother’s Surgery Amid Ongoing Legal Battle

The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to activist Umar Khalid for a period of three days, allowing him to attend to his ailing mother and participate in significant family rituals. This decision, announced on Friday, applies to Khalid’s ongoing legal proceedings related to the conspiracy case involving the 2020 Delhi riots.

A division bench comprising Justices Prathiba Singh and Madhu Jain approved Khalid’s release from June 1 to June 3. The former student of Jawaharlal Nehru University had initially requested a 15-day bail to attend the Chehlum ceremony, which commemorates 40 days following his uncle’s passing, in addition to being present for his mother’s surgery scheduled for June 2.

Previously, a Delhi court had denied his request for extended bail. Following this, Khalid’s legal team, led by lawyer Trideep Pais, escalated the matter to the High Court, highlighting that he had been granted temporary bail on multiple occasions in the past for significant family events, including his sister’s wedding in December and other short periods in 2022 and 2024.

The Additional Solicitor General, SV Raju, representing the Delhi Police, argued against the need for Khalid’s presence, indicating that the surgery was a minor procedure and that Khalid’s sisters were capable of providing care. He suggested that Khalid could visit his mother for the day with police supervision, but the High Court opted to take a more compassionate approach in its judgment.

This ruling reflects the judiciary’s consideration for personal circumstances amid ongoing legal challenges. Khalid’s case has garnered significant attention, given the broader implications of the 2020 riots and the legal battles faced by various activists involved in related cases.
