The West Bengal Police have initiated a first information report (FIR) against prominent actors Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Swastika Mukherjee. This action follows allegations that both made incendiary remarks on social media in the wake of the violent aftermath of the 2021 Assembly elections, as reported by PTI.
The complaint was lodged at Gariahat Police Station by advocate Joydeep Sen, who asserted that the social media interactions of the two actors may have instigated further political unrest during an already volatile period. The 2021 Assembly elections, which took place in May, saw the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secure a decisive victory with 215 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) garnered 77 seats. The aftermath was marred by widespread reports of violence and intimidation across the state.
In light of the chaos following the election results, the Calcutta High Court ordered an investigation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established to address the allegations of post-poll violence. The context surrounding the actors’ remarks is particularly significant, as tensions were running high with allegations flying between political factions.
According to the complaint, Parambrata Chattopadhyay made a controversial post on May 2, 2021, stating, “Let today be declared World Thrashing Day,” which was met with a response from Swastika Mukherjee saying, “Hahaha, let it be.” These statements are claimed to have played a role in inciting hostilities among supporters of different political parties during a time of heightened sensitivity.
The allegations against Chattopadhyay and Mukherjee highlight the growing concern over the influence public figures can have on political discourse, especially in a deeply polarized environment. As the situation unfolds, it raises questions about the responsibilities of celebrities in shaping public sentiment and their potential impact on societal stability.
