In a significant development, Arjumand Gulzar, also known as Burhan Hamza, a noted terrorist implicated in the 2019 Pulwama attack, was killed by unidentified assailants in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This incident, reported by PTI on Thursday, marks a critical moment in the ongoing issues surrounding terrorism and security in the region.
According to officials, Hamza was ambushed by gunmen in Muzaffarabad and sustained critical injuries. He was subsequently airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital in Rawalpindi, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The assailants managed to flee the scene before security forces could respond, raising questions about the lapses in security and the operational capabilities of local law enforcement.
The 2019 Pulwama attack remains one of the deadliest assaults against Indian security forces, where a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a convoy of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, resulting in the deaths of 40 soldiers. The attack was claimed by the Pakistani militant organization Jaish-e-Mohammed, which has been a focal point of India’s concerns regarding cross-border terrorism.
Hamza was designated as a terrorist by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs in 2022 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, following a comprehensive investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). His affiliations were reportedly with various militant groups, including Al Badr and Al Baraq, and he was believed to have established connections with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), further complicating the security landscape.
This incident not only highlights the persistent threat of terrorism in the region but also underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating such threats. As investigations continue, the implications of Hamza’s death could have broader ramifications for regional security dynamics and the fight against terrorism in South Asia.
