The Congress party has officially announced the appointment of VD Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala, putting an end to a 10-day period of uncertainty that followed the Assembly elections on May 4. Satheesan, who currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Kerala Assembly, was chosen following extensive discussions among the party’s senior leadership and state representatives in New Delhi, which included notable figures such as Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Satheesan’s selection marks a significant shift in Kerala’s political landscape, as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) successfully secured 102 out of 140 seats in the recently concluded elections, ending a decade-long reign of the Left Democratic Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). This transition underscores the party’s aim to reclaim its influence in a state that has long been a political battleground.
The deliberation surrounding the Chief Minister’s position had been intense, centering on prominent party members, including MLA Ramesh Chennithala and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal. Venugopal expressed his support for Satheesan’s appointment, describing it as a positive step for fulfilling the aspirations and commitments made to the people of Kerala. He emphasized the party’s collective backing for the new government, stating, “Certainly, we are totally behind the government of Keralam.”
In a scheduled meeting at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, the Congress Legislature Party is expected to formally ratify Satheesan’s appointment. The new Chief Minister, who has been elected as an MLA six times, achieved a notable victory against ET Taison of the Communist Party of India from the Paravur constituency, winning by a significant margin.
As Kerala prepares for this new chapter under Satheesan’s leadership, many are keen to see how the UDF government will address the pressing issues faced by the state, from economic development to social welfare programs. The political community is watching closely, as the Congress aims to implement its agenda and meet the expectations of its constituents in the wake of this electoral success.
