In a significant political move, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met with President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Tuesday, advocating for the disqualification of six Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs who recently defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This meeting comes in the wake of a controversial split that saw seven out of ten AAP MPs in the Upper House switch allegiance to the ruling party.
The defection of these MPs, all of whom had been elected from Punjab where the AAP currently holds power, has sparked intense debate about the integrity of democratic processes in the country. CM Mann emphasized that these MPs were not chosen by public vote but were ‘selected’ by AAP legislators in Punjab, which he argues underscores the undemocratic nature of their sudden political alignment with the BJP.
Post-meeting, Mann informed the media that he had submitted a formal memorandum to the President, which was co-signed by all AAP MLAs from Punjab, requesting the cancellation of the memberships of the six MPs who have joined the BJP. He expressed concerns over what he termed as a ‘murder of democracy’ occurring in India and highlighted the ongoing use of central agencies to manipulate political outcomes.
Mann’s remarks reflect a broader apprehension among opposition parties regarding the BJP’s tactics, which they allege include exploiting central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation to undermine rival political factions. He described such actions as a form of political ‘washing’ aimed at sanitizing leaders with dubious pasts.
By framing the resignation of AAP MPs as a grave threat to democratic values, Mann is rallying support not only within Punjab but also among other opposition leaders who share similar concerns. The political landscape in India is becoming increasingly polarized, with allegations of coercion and unethical maneuvering becoming commonplace in the competition for power.
