On Saturday, mobile users across India received an unusual notification labelled ‘extremely severe alert’, as the central government initiated a trial of its latest mass communication system designed to warn citizens in the event of disasters. This alarm, which emerged on various mobile devices accompanied by distinct beeping sounds, informed users: ‘India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology, for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message.’
Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, reassured the public that there was no cause for concern regarding the alert. He emphasized that the newly established Disaster Communication System, created through collaboration between the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), aims to provide timely and location-specific alerts in multiple languages. This feature is particularly critical in a country like India, where diverse linguistic and geographical landscapes pose unique challenges during emergencies.
The technology behind these alerts is known as cell broadcast, a method that allows for the dissemination of brief messages to a multitude of mobile phones within a designated area. This system is particularly advantageous as it can penetrate network congestion, ensuring that critical information reaches individuals swiftly, even during crises when communication networks may be strained.
Scindia took to Twitter to clarify the nature of these messages: ‘If you receive a message like this on your phone, it is a test alert as part of India’s new nationwide mobile-based Disaster Communication System.’ The initiative reflects a significant stride towards enhancing public safety through technological advancement and proactive communication strategies in disaster management.
The introduction of this alert system is timely, especially with the increasing frequency of natural calamities in various regions across the country.
