On Saturday morning, repolling commenced at 15 designated polling stations in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, following an order from the Election Commission just a day prior. The electoral process, which began at 7 AM and is set to last until 6 PM, encompasses 11 booths in the Magrahat Paschim Assembly constituency and four in the Diamond Harbour constituency.
The need for repolling arose after issues were reported during the second phase of the Assembly elections held earlier this week. Notably, the first phase of voting took place on April 23. The overall voter turnout for both phases has been recorded at an impressive 92.4%, according to the Election Commission. The counting of votes for this round is scheduled for Monday.
The Election Commission made the decision to nullify the results from the 15 polling booths based on reports from returning officers and observers, citing “material circumstances” that warranted the move. This situation marks the first instance where repolling has been deemed necessary in the current Assembly elections across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.
In the lead-up to the repolling, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised serious allegations against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), claiming that there had been tampering with voting machines in the Falta area of Diamond Harbour. The BJP alleged that the voting button adjacent to their symbol was improperly taped over in multiple booths. The TMC has vigorously denied these allegations, contending that the BJP’s claims are unfounded and merely a diversion from their own shortcomings.
This repolling raises important questions about the integrity of the electoral process in West Bengal, an issue that has been at the forefront of political discussions. As citizens participate in the repolling, the focus will be on ensuring a transparent and fair voting experience, while the outcome will likely have significant implications for the ongoing political landscape in the region.
