Bombay High Court Grants Bail to Convict in Narendra Dabholkar Murder Case

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to Sharad Kalaskar, one of the individuals convicted in the high-profile murder case of anti-superstition advocate Narendra Dabholkar. The decision came from a bench comprising Justices Ajay Gadkari and Ranjitsinha Bhonsale, who raised questions about the identification of Kalaskar as one of the assailants. A detailed court order is expected to follow this preliminary ruling.

Narendra Dabholkar founded the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, an organization dedicated to combating superstition and promoting rational thought. His assassination, which took place in Pune in August 2013, sent shockwaves across the nation and highlighted the risks faced by activists advocating for scientific thinking and social reform. In May 2024, a special court in Pune convicted Kalaskar alongside his accomplice Sachin Andure, sentencing both to life imprisonment for their roles in the crime. Two other accused, Virendrasingh Tawade and Vikram Bhave, were acquitted during the trial, leading to ongoing legal disputes regarding their innocence.

Dabholkar’s daughter has since appealed against the acquittal of Tawade and Bhave, seeking justice for her father’s murder. Meanwhile, Kalaskar has also contested his conviction, requesting bail while his appeal is pending. The High Court’s recent ruling allows him to secure his release on a bail bond of Rs 50,000. Importantly, the judges denied a request from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to stay the bail order for four weeks, emphasizing their reservations about Kalaskar’s identification in the case.

The judicial system’s handling of the Dabholkar murder case has drawn significant public attention, given its implications for freedom of expression and the safety of activists in India. The case has highlighted the larger societal issues surrounding superstition and the push for rationalism, which remains a contentious topic in various regions of the country.
