The second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections has seen an impressive voter turnout, expected to surpass 90%. As per reports from the Election Commission, a turnout of 89.9% was recorded by 5 PM, indicating strong engagement from the electorate. This phase covered 142 of the state’s 294 assembly constituencies, following a remarkable 93.2% turnout in the first phase held on April 23.
Despite the enthusiasm, the elections have not been without their challenges. Instances of violence and vandalism were reported across various regions in the state during the initial voting hours. These disturbances raise concerns about electoral integrity and public safety during such critical democratic processes.
In response to allegations of tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in certain booths, the Election Commission has announced plans for repolling in affected areas. This decision comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised alarms over claims that tape had been used to obstruct the voting buttons for their party in several locations, including Falta. Amit Malviya, the BJP’s publicity chief, has called for immediate re-elections in all booths where these irregularities were reported, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness.
The scrutiny surrounding the electoral process highlights the intense political environment in West Bengal, a state known for its vibrant and often contentious political landscape. As the votes are being counted and the results are anticipated, the role of the Election Commission in ensuring a free and fair election remains under watch. The aftermath of the elections will likely see discussions around electoral reforms and the measures needed to strengthen the democratic process in India.
