Voting for the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections commenced at 7 AM on Wednesday, drawing significant attention amid heightened security measures. This phase will see voters casting their ballots across 142 constituencies, which span across seven districts of the state.
The polling process is scheduled to conclude at 6 PM, following a promising first phase that took place on April 23, where voters expressed their enthusiasm with a record turnout of 93.2% in 152 seats across 16 districts. As the electorate heads to the polls today, all eyes are set on the counting day, which will occur on May 4. This counting will encompass results from West Bengal as well as from Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, making it a crucial day for multiple states.
Since 2011, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) has maintained a dominant position in West Bengal politics. However, the landscape has shifted in recent years, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as a formidable opponent. In the previous assembly elections held in 2021, the BJP secured 77 seats, while the TMC won a significant 215 seats in the 294-member assembly. To establish a majority, a party or coalition requires 148 seats.
The opposition landscape is quite diverse, with the Left parties and the Congress forming an alliance alongside smaller parties. Despite capturing about 10% of the vote share in the last elections, this coalition could only manage to secure a single seat, highlighting the challenges they face in regaining foothold in the state’s political dynamics.
As this election cycle unfolds, the outcome of the second phase is keenly anticipated, not just for West Bengal but also for its implications on the national political scene. The results will signal potential shifts in voter sentiment and could shape the strategies of various political parties in the upcoming elections.
