Tragic Fireworks Factory Blast in Kerala Claims 13 Lives Ahead of Thrissur Pooram Festival

In a devastating incident that has shocked the community, at least 13 people lost their lives and 40 others sustained injuries due to a series of explosions at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Kerala. The incident occurred on Tuesday as workers were preparing fireworks for the highly anticipated Thrissur Pooram festival, slated to take place on April 26 at the Vadakkunnathan temple.

The explosions erupted around 3:30 PM at a temporary setup consisting of sheds on a five-acre agricultural land in Mundathikode. As workers were assembling fireworks intended for a sample display set for Friday, two massive blasts rocked the area, leading to a significant fire that engulfed five of the eight sheds on the site. Reports indicate that many of those injured are in critical condition, with one victim suffering over 90% burns, while others have sustained severe injuries ranging from 70% to 90% burns.

This tragic event comes just days after a similar catastrophe occurred in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district, where 23 individuals tragically lost their lives in another fireworks factory explosion. The frequency of such incidents raises urgent questions about safety standards within the fireworks industry, which is known for its hazardous working conditions.

City Police Commissioner Nakul Rajendra Deshmukh confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was sudden and unexpected. Injured individuals are currently being treated at various hospitals across the region, with medical officials at the Thrissur Government Medical College indicating that five of those injured are in dire condition as they battle life-threatening injuries.

The Thrissur Pooram festival is one of the most storied and vibrant temple festivals in Kerala, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists each year.
