In a tragic incident along the Dhabolguri border, a Bangladeshi individual was shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday. The man, identified as 41-year-old Ali Hossain, was reportedly attempting to illegally cross into India when he was engaged by the BSF.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Syed Fazle Munim of the Border Guard Bangladesh, Hossain and a group of seven to eight fellow nationals were trying to breach the barbed-wire fence separating the two countries during the night. The BSF’s 156 battalion initially fired warning shots to disperse the group. However, when the group did not comply, the Indian forces resorted to live fire, resulting in Hossain being struck. The remaining individuals managed to escape.
After being shot, Hossain was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Bangladeshi authorities have reported that his body is currently in India, with plans underway to repatriate it to Bangladesh. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding border security and the treatment of individuals attempting to cross the international boundary.
The timing of the incident is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with the visit of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to India. This visit marks the first high-level diplomatic engagement since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party assumed power earlier this year. As both nations work to strengthen bilateral ties, incidents like this highlight the persistent challenges at the border.
In recent months, the issue of illegal crossings has been a point of contention between India and Bangladesh. The Indian government has consistently emphasized the need for heightened security measures along the 4,096-kilometre-long border to prevent illegal immigration and smuggling. However, such measures often lead to tragic outcomes, as seen in this incident.
