The Supreme Court of India has temporarily paused the investigation into allegations of financial irregularities involving former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alongside his daughter and son-in-law. This decision, made on Wednesday, came in response to a petition filed by Vijayan and his family, contesting a prior ruling by the Kerala High Court that mandated the registration of a criminal case against them.
The controversy centers on questionable financial dealings involving two companies: state-owned Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited and Exalogic Solutions Private Limited, which is owned by Vijayan’s daughter, Veena Thaikkandiyil. During the proceedings, the Supreme Court made it clear that the suspension of the investigation only applies to ongoing inquiries and does not impede the initial registration of the First Information Report (FIR), which was lodged by the Kerala Police on October 12.
Earlier in the month, on October 9, the Kerala High Court’s single-judge bench instructed the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau to initiate an FIR against Vijayan, his daughter Veena, and son-in-law PA Mohammed Riyas. This directive stemmed from information presented by the Enforcement Directorate, which had uncovered potential irregularities in transactions between the involved parties. However, when Vijayan, Veena, and Riyas approached a division bench of the High Court to contest the ruling, their request was denied on October 15 due to the assertion that they were not original parties to the case.
The legal battle surrounding this case has ignited significant political discourse in Kerala. Pinarayi Vijayan, who served as the Chief Minister of Kerala since 2016, has faced scrutiny before, but this latest development brings renewed attention to his administration and its dealings. With his popularity among supporters and critics alike, this situation is likely to impact the political landscape as the state gears up for future elections.
As the case unfolds, the Supreme Court’s stay on the investigation underscores the ongoing tension between legal proceedings and political ramifications, reflecting the intricate relationship between governance and accountability in India. Observers will be keen to see how the situation evolves in the coming days, particularly with the implications it could have for Vijayan and the political party he represents, the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
