In a significant move to uphold food safety standards, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of eight eateries in Mumbai. Following inspections conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, authorities seized approximately 38 tonnes of food stock valued at Rs 54.6 lakh across the state.
The inspections revealed serious violations at the establishments, which ranged from unsanitary kitchen conditions to the use of unauthorized food colors in sweets. Moreover, the inspections found poorly maintained drainage systems, rusted utensils, and incomplete temperature logs. Alarmingly, some staff members were found to be working without valid medical certificates, raising concerns about public health.
Among the eateries affected, notable establishments include SK Bakery in Mazgaon, Nekzad Restaurant in Grant Road, and Foodies Multi Cuisine in Bandra. Other notable closures include Arabian Luqma in Jogeshwari, Delhi Zaika in Kurla, You Mee in Ghatkopar, a Domino’s Pizza outlet in Bhandup, and Bikkgane Biryani in the Govandi-Chembur area. The FDA has indicated that these suspensions will take effect immediately; however, the specific violations for each restaurant remain undisclosed.
The scale of the food stock seizure was particularly pronounced in Navi Mumbai, where officials confiscated over 33,000 kg of kidney beans and other pulses worth approximately Rs 50 lakh from RDC Agro Ventures located in the Shirwane area of Nerul. The FDA suspects that these products were substandard and incorrectly labeled, prompting immediate action to ensure consumer safety.
Additionally, in the Nashik division, inspections led to the seizure of 483.4 kg of various food products from three establishments, valued at Rs 1.7 lakh. The widespread enforcement actions are part of the FDA’s ongoing commitment to safeguard public health in the face of rising concerns over food quality and hygiene in the industry. As these measures unfold, consumers are urged to remain vigilant and report any similar violations they may encounter.
