Mumbai witnessed a tense situation on Friday as the Mumbai Police detained several individuals who had gathered for a ‘Tiranga March’ at Carter Road in Bandra. The march, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), was a show of solidarity for their leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das, and Ajinkya Shinde, who were recently arrested by the Delhi Police amid nationwide protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Despite the Mumbai Police’s refusal to grant permission for the march, numerous supporters of the CJP congregated at the designated site, leading to a swift police response. The CJP claimed that police personnel from the Vakola and Bandra stations detained several of its supporters as they attempted to express their dissent. Activist Purva Khetan, a volunteer with the party, reported that some students in the vicinity, particularly in Santacruz East, were also restricted from leaving their accommodations ahead of the event.
According to Khetan, the students were not provided with any explanation regarding their detention, raising concerns about freedom of movement and expression. In response to these allegations, Senior Police Inspector Navnath Ghuge stated that no individuals were taken to the police station and that the authorities were merely ensuring that the public order was maintained.
The unrest comes at a time when political tensions are escalating across the country, particularly surrounding the actions of the Election Commission and the ongoing protests that have sparked discussions on electoral integrity. The CJP’s march was seen as a reflection of growing discontent among certain groups regarding the electoral process and the role of the Chief Election Commissioner.
As the situation in Mumbai unfolded, it highlighted the delicate balance between civic activism and law enforcement in India. The CJP and its supporters maintain that their actions are a vital part of a democratic society, aiming to hold those in power accountable and to advocate for electoral reform.
