A woman journalist, who has accused Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat of sexual harassment, was detained for the second time on Monday, as protests escalated outside the Parliament Street police station. Demonstrators have been demanding that a formal first information report (FIR) be filed against Bhagat in light of the allegations. This marks her second detention in two days, following a similar incident during a protest on Sunday.
The journalist’s allegations came to the forefront during a recent protest at Jantar Mantar, where she, alongside two other women journalists, claimed they were subjected to harassment by police officers. According to her account, the incident occurred while she was filming student leader Neha Bora’s detention, during which Bhagat allegedly groped her. Frustrated by the lack of response from the police, she attempted to file a complaint at the Parliament Street police station, but no action was taken.
In response to the mounting public outcry, the Delhi Police addressed the situation on Sunday, stating that they had received the sexual harassment allegations “in the context of the emergent law and order situation.” Subsequently, the New Delhi district police forwarded the complaints to the Kamla Market Crime Branch for what they termed a “fair and impartial enquiry” into the allegations against the involved police officers. However, it remains unclear whether these actions pertain specifically to the claims against Bhagat or if they are related to the broader complaints of sexual assault made by the journalists.
The protests have garnered significant media attention, shining a spotlight on issues of safety and accountability within law enforcement agencies. The incidents raise critical questions regarding the treatment of women journalists in the field and the systemic challenges they face when reporting on sensitive issues, particularly those involving police conduct. The gravity of the situation has compelled many advocacy groups and public figures to voice their support for the journalists, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation and justice.
As the protests continue to unfold, the demand for accountability from law enforcement has resonated strongly with the public, reflecting broader concerns about women’s safety and the integrity of those tasked with upholding the law. The coming days will likely see heightened scrutiny of the police’s response to these allegations and the measures they implement to ensure the safety of journalists and citizens alike.
