TMC and Kolkata Police Clash Over Banner Removal, Party Claims Assault

An intense confrontation erupted on Thursday between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Kolkata Police as officials attempted to remove a political banner from a party office. The incident occurred at the TMC’s Camac Street office and saw party leader Abhishek Banerjee directly involved in the altercation with law enforcement and municipal corporation representatives.

According to TMC officials, police arrived with what they described as an “illegal notice” demanding the removal of the banner. The party accused the Kolkata Police of intruding into their office without just cause. Following the arrival of police, a TMC worker was reportedly detained, raising concerns about the conduct of the authorities involved in the operation.

In response to the situation, Banerjee quickly reached the scene, demanding to see the official notice that purportedly authorized the removal of the banner. TMC representatives claimed that the municipal official failed to provide a valid notice, further escalating tensions. Reports suggest that during the scuffle, both Banerjee and TMC MP Derek O’Brien were allegedly assaulted, with party members stating that police also manhandled supporters and staff within the office premises. Additionally, disturbing claims surfaced regarding the treatment of female security personnel at the office, with allegations that their clothing was torn during the chaos.

Following this incident, the TMC has vowed to take legal action against what they term the excessive use of force and unlawful intrusion by the police. Banerjee took to social media to express his outrage, stating, “West Bengal is witnessing the steady erosion of constitutional governance and an alarming descent into a police state.” He emphasized that when state power operates beyond constitutional limits, it poses a significant threat to democracy.

The TMC’s accusations have sparked a broader conversation about the dynamics of power in West Bengal, particularly concerning the relationship between the ruling party and law enforcement.
