Mumbai Metro’s Rs 250 Crore Viaduct Faces Demolition Over Height Clearance Issues

In a significant setback for Mumbai’s Metro Line 7A project, construction work valued at Rs 250 crore on a nearly one-kilometer viaduct in Vile Parle East is under scrutiny due to height clearance issues. Authorities have revealed that the design did not adequately account for the requisite clearance for overhead electrical equipment, leading to a potential demolition and rebuild of this section of the viaduct.

This stretch, which is intended as a 3.4-km extension of Metro Line 7 connecting Andheri East to the Mumbai airport, is located within the airport funnel zone. Here, the Airports Authority of India imposes strict height restrictions to ensure the safety and operational integrity of airport activities. Unfortunately, when the authority provided the necessary no-objection certificates in 2022, the additional vertical space required for the overhead electrical infrastructure was overlooked, resulting in a concerning height discrepancy of approximately 2.5 meters.

The issue was identified earlier this year in 2025, prompting authorities to pause construction while they sought revised permissions from the Airports Authority. Since then, work on this critical segment has remained halted, casting uncertainty over the entire project timeline. An official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) indicated that if a viable solution is not reached soon, the entire viaduct may need to be reconstructed to meet regulatory requirements.

Originally slated to commence operations in 2021, the Metro Line 7A has faced repeated delays, raising concerns among commuters and stakeholders about the growing challenges of urban transit infrastructure in India’s financial capital.
