Mumbai’s Koli Fisherwomen: An Artist’s Journey to Preserve Their Heritage

The Koli community, known as the original inhabitants of Greater Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane in western Maharashtra, holds a significant place in the region’s rich cultural tapestry. This fishing community has witnessed historic events, from the rise and fall of empires to the profound impacts of colonial rule and the subsequent quest for independence. As India transitioned into a republic and faced the challenges of rapid urbanization, the Koli’s traditional way of life began to unravel.

The number of Koliwadas, or traditional fishing villages, has diminished sharply, currently standing at just over 275 within the sprawling metropolis. These communities, once flourishing, now find themselves increasingly surrounded by modern skyscrapers and urban infrastructure, forcing the fisherfolk to grapple with profound changes.

As urban development encroaches on their fishing grounds, the Koli community is facing dire challenges. The ocean, which has sustained them for generations, is now burdened by pollution and ecological distress. Rapid industrialization and unprecedented climate change have wreaked havoc on their marine environment, leading to the degradation of critical habitats such as mangrove forests and estuaries. The waters that once teemed with life now struggle under the weight of urban refuse and industrial waste.

In the last 15 years, the Koli villages have experienced a distressing shift in livelihoods as fishermen are compelled to abandon their traditional practices. Many have been pushed away from the estuaries that were once the lifeblood of their community. This transition not only threatens their economic stability but also jeopardizes the cultural identity they have safeguarded for generations. The Koli fisherwomen, in particular, play a pivotal role in preserving their heritage and wisdom, making their plight all the more urgent.

In a new book, an artist shares poignant stories from her collaboration with the Koli fisherwomen, highlighting their struggles and resilience in the face of adversity.
