A devastating fire broke out at a hotel near the famous Tarapith Temple in Birbhum, West Bengal, in the early hours of Monday, August 17. The blaze reportedly started on the lower floor of the four-storey hotel when most of the guests were asleep. Thick smoke quickly spread through the building, trapping several pilgrims inside.
At least eight people have died in the incident, while several others were injured and taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Firefighters and police teams rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation. Several guests were rescued from the building.
Preliminary reports suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Questions have also been raised over the hotel’s fire-safety arrangements and emergency exits.
The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over Tarapith, which was witnessing a heavy influx of pilgrims on the final Monday of the holy Shravan month. Authorities have begun an investigation into the incident.
