A Delhi court has granted bail to leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, who were detained earlier for their protest activities. The two activists, along with their ally Ajinkya Shinde, were arrested on October 13 after they entered the Jantar Mantar area waving the national flag. Their protest was aimed at opposing the recent decision to revoke the status of Jantar Mantar as a designated site for public protests.
Initially, Ranka and Das were remanded to judicial custody for five days shortly after their arrest. However, following the expiration of their custody, the court decided to extend their detention by an additional two days. Shinde, on the other hand, was released on a personal bond during this tumultuous time.
In a related development, the State Bank of India (SBI) has reported a significant cyberattack that resulted in the breach of approximately 375,000 customer records, with 3,897 of these records containing sensitive personally identifiable information. This data breach included crucial details such as customer names, mobile numbers, birth dates, gender, email addresses, and home addresses. Despite the severity of the incident, SBI has reassured its customers that the breach is not expected to affect its operational capabilities or financial results.
Digital rights group Internet Freedom Foundation has raised concerns regarding SBI’s response to the data breach. The organization criticized the bank for failing to notify the affected customers directly, stating that the bank’s communication about the breach was limited to informing stock exchanges. This lack of transparency has sparked discussions about consumer rights and the responsibilities of financial institutions in safeguarding personal data.
As these two incidents unfold, they highlight significant issues surrounding freedom of expression and data security in India. The ongoing discourse regarding the rights to protest and the protection of personal information will undoubtedly garner more public interest as citizens become increasingly aware of their rights in a digital age.
