Kolkata experienced a heartbreaking tragedy on Saturday evening as a stampede during the Durga Puja celebrations claimed the lives of at least 19 individuals, including women and children. The incident occurred around 7:40 PM at a pandal in north Kolkata, where a sudden downpour led to panic among the revelers. Crowds that had gathered outside rushed to seek shelter inside the pandal, escalating the situation to a catastrophic level.
According to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the rush was exacerbated by a distressing announcement warning attendees that the pandal could collapse if the crowd was not controlled. This message reportedly incited fear and prompted a chaotic surge as people hurried to find refuge. Many of the injured victims were subsequently transported to Kolkata Medical College and several other hospitals for medical assistance.
The aftermath of the incident has prompted serious repercussions. Authorities have detained 12 individuals, including members of the organizing committee, private security personnel, and volunteers, for questioning regarding the event. The Kolkata Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage to identify failures in crowd management that may have led to this disastrous incident. Chief Minister Adhikari has indicated that those found negligent in their responsibilities will face stringent action.
In a bid to ensure accountability, the state government plans to appoint a sitting judge from the Calcutta High Court to oversee the investigation led by a special team. Following the incident, the pandal has been closed to the public, and the site has been cordoned off for further investigation and forensic analysis. This unfortunate episode has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing their grief and disbelief at such a calamity occurring during a festival that celebrates joy and togetherness.
Traditionally, Durga Puja is a time of celebration in West Bengal, bringing together families and communities in a spirit of devotion and festivity. The unexpected loss of life during this sacred occasion has raised concerns about safety protocols at large public gatherings, especially during peak visiting hours. As the city mourns the victims, discussions surrounding event safety and crowd management are increasingly becoming the focal point for authorities and citizens alike.
