The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia confirmed on Sunday that an Indian citizen injured in a recent attack at Riyadh’s international airport has succumbed to his injuries. This tragic event unfolded on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals from various nations and leaving over 300 people injured, marking it as the most lethal assault on Saudi soil since May 2015.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Yousuf Ali, a resident of Hyderabad, who was in Saudi Arabia with his family for the Islamic pilgrimage of Umrah. Reports suggest that the family was waiting for their flight at the airport when the attack occurred, which has left a pall of grief over their community back home.
In the aftermath of the attack, the Indian embassy expressed its deep condolences to Ali’s family and pledged to offer necessary assistance, including the facilitation of his body’s repatriation to India. The embassy further reported that among the injured, three Indian nationals are currently in intensive care but are stable, while two others are receiving treatment in regular hospital wards. Some injured individuals have already been discharged.
This horrific incident has also claimed the lives of four Saudi citizens, with fatalities reported from Bangladesh, the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Egypt, according to the Saudi civil aviation authority. The violence has drawn attention globally and raised concerns about safety in the region.
The attack has been attributed to Yemen’s Houthi militant group, which has ramped up its assault on Saudi Arabia in recent days. The continuing conflict in Yemen has spilled over its borders, raising alarms among international observers about the potential for increased instability in the Middle East. As the situation develops, the Indian government is expected to monitor the safety of its citizens abroad closely.
