A Delhi court has granted the release of three leaders from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) under the condition that they maintain peace for the next year. The court’s decision came after Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained from an aircraft upon its arrival in the capital on Saturday. The leaders were en route to participate in protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The CJP, alongside Leftist factions, has organized another round of demonstrations in Delhi following previous protests that saw the detention of thousands, including opposition leaders, activists, lawyers, and journalists. The protests centered around allegations of irregularities in the recent special intensive revision of electoral rolls and have sparked significant public outcry.
On Sunday, protesters are expected to gather at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, as CJP officials reiterated their commitment to ongoing agitation until their demands are addressed. Neha Bora, the chief of the All India Students’ Association, emphasized that “another part of Delhi will become Jantar Mantar,” hinting at an expansion of the protest presence throughout the city. However, she did not disclose the specific locations for additional gatherings.
In parallel with the demonstrations in Delhi, protests are also planned in Mumbai, where activists are set to assemble near Shivaji Park at 4 PM. The CJP’s legal head, Ratna Singh, explained that the leadership’s release on the ‘no-breach of peace’ condition was a necessary step to allow them to continue advocating for electoral reform and accountability.
The Supreme Court is set to hear petitions related to the mass detentions that occurred during the previous protests, as public attention grows around the issues of electoral integrity and the civil rights of demonstrators. The situation remains fluid, with both political and legal developments expected to unfold in the coming days.
