In a significant development on Saturday, popular YouTuber and activist Dhruv Rathee was taken into custody by Delhi Police in Gurugram. This incident occurred as he was set to participate in a protest organized by youth groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Rathee had traveled to the national capital a day prior to lend his voice to the mounting discontent over the Election Commission’s operations.
The protest, spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party alongside student factions linked to Leftist parties, is part of a broader movement that has seen demonstrations erupt across numerous cities in India. Activists and concerned citizens have been rallying against what they perceive as a pattern of mismanagement and bias within the Election Commission, particularly regarding the recent intensive revision of electoral rolls. This growing concern has fueled calls for an overhaul of the election oversight body.
As per reports, the protest at Jantar Mantar was slated to commence at 10 AM, but the police preemptively denied permission for the gathering. In an apparent bid to stifle the movement, law enforcement agencies imposed stringent restrictions, including detaining several individuals, curtailing train services, shutting down 45 metro stations, and suspending mobile internet access in central Delhi. These actions have been interpreted by organizers as an effort to intimidate protesters and suppress dissent.
In response to Rathee’s detention, the Cockroach Janta Party issued a statement proclaiming, “The dictator is terrified of young people who question its wrongdoings and refuse to remain silent!” This sentiment echoes a broader frustration among youth who feel marginalized and unheard in the current political climate. The protest aimed not just to call for the CEC’s resignation, but to challenge what many see as an erosion of democratic rights and the right to protest.
Despite the police clampdown, a significant number of protesters gathered at various locations, including near Jantar Mantar and Connaught Place, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity. The authorities detained hundreds of these demonstrators as tensions escalated ahead of the planned protest. The situation reflects a growing divide in Indian civil society, where calls for accountability and transparency in governance confront a robust governmental response.
