Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were intercepted by police shortly after arriving in Delhi on Saturday as they prepared to participate in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained on their flight from Mumbai, landing at around 10:20 AM. A video shared by the party depicted the moment police officers boarded the aircraft to apprehend them before they could deboard.
The planned demonstration was set to take place at Jantar Mantar and was organized by the CJP in collaboration with student groups aligned with leftist ideologies. Over the past few weeks, widespread protests have erupted across various cities in India, driven by growing dissatisfaction with the Election Commission’s operations, particularly concerning the ongoing revision of electoral rolls.
According to the organizers, the protests were slated to commence at 10 AM, but the authorities preemptively denied permission for the gathering. In a move described by activists as an attempt to stifle dissent, the police implemented several restrictions in the national capital aimed at dissuading potential demonstrators. These measures included detaining individuals and even canceling train services.
This incident highlights a larger trend of escalating tensions between protestors and law enforcement agencies in India, especially when it comes to political dissent. The CJP’s grievance centers on the allegations directed at the Election Commission regarding its credibility and impartiality, particularly under the leadership of Gyanesh Kumar.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the protests will evolve in response to these detentions and the broader implications for political expression in India. Activists and supporters of the CJP have taken to social media to express their outrage, calling for accountability from the authorities and reiterating their demand for electoral reforms.
